A CCTV camera is one of the most effective deterrents against burglary, trespassing and vandalism. But not every camera is right for every location. Choosing the right CCTV system means balancing image quality, coverage, lighting conditions and storage in a way that matches your real security needs.
Start with Resolution and Field of View
Camera resolution determines how much detail you can capture. A 2MP (1080p) camera is acceptable for small rooms, while 4MP to 8MP (4K) cameras provide clearer faces, number plates and distant objects. Equally important is the lens angle: a wide-angle lens covers more area but reduces detail at distance, while a narrow lens gives focused detail over a smaller area.
Night Vision Is Essential
Most security incidents happen after dark. Look for cameras with infrared (IR) LEDs, Starlight sensors or low-lux performance. Starlight and full-color night vision sensors can produce usable images in very low light without switching to purely black-and-white IR, giving you better evidence if an incident occurs.
AI Motion and Human Detection
Older motion-detection systems trigger on swaying trees, animals or passing headlights. Modern AI cameras can distinguish people, vehicles and even packages, sending alerts only when it matters. This reduces false alarms and saves storage by recording only relevant events.
Storage and Connectivity
Decide between local storage on an SD card or NVR, and encrypted cloud storage. Local storage keeps data on your premises; cloud storage protects against theft of the camera itself. For outdoor use, choose IP66 or IP67 weatherproof cameras, and use wired PoE connections where reliability matters. Wi-Fi cameras work well indoors but need a strong signal.
